The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory to state food safety commissioners, regional directors, and central licensing authorities. The aim is to ensure effective implementation of the plastic waste management rules within their jurisdictions.

Introduction

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory to state food safety commissioners, regional directors, and central licensing authorities. The aim is to ensure effective implementation of the plastic waste management rules within their jurisdictions.

1. Plastic Waste Management Rules and Prohibitions

Recently, the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change introduced the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules 2021. These rules prohibit the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of single-use plastic items. Items such as candy sticks, ice cream sticks, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery (forks, spoons, knives, and straws), trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, and plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns are included in the ban. These items have been identified as having low utility and high littering potential. The rules have been in effect since July 1, 2022.

2. FSSAI’s Directive to Food Safety Officials

Recognizing the importance of effective compliance with the plastic waste management rules, FSSAI has requested senior officials to instruct food safety officers and designated officers within their jurisdictions. These officials play a pivotal role in ensuring the rules are adhered to. FSSAI’s directive emphasizes the need to eliminate the use of packaging films for wrapping or packing sweet boxes by any food business operator. By taking this step, FSSAI aims to promote sustainable packaging alternatives and reduce plastic waste generation.

3. Drive for Self-Compliance

In addition to the advisory, FSSAI has called upon state officials to organize a special drive aimed at encouraging self-compliance among food businesses. This initiative seeks to create awareness and provide necessary guidance to food business operators, empowering them to voluntarily adopt sustainable packaging practices. FSSAI recognizes that collective efforts are key to achieving effective and lasting change.

Conclusion

We have witnessed a significant step towards addressing the plastic waste crisis in the food industry with FSSAI’s recent advisory. Through the involvement of food safety officials and the promotion of self-compliance, FSSAI is paving the way for a more sustainable future. By reducing plastic waste and embracing eco-friendly packaging practices, we can contribute to the preservation of our environment and the well-being of future generations. Together, let us join hands in the fight against plastic waste and create a healthier planet for all.
