Ministry of Women and Child Development organise Poshan Utsav

The Ministry of Women and Child Development recently hosted the Poshan Utsav at The Oberoi, a momentous occasion dedicated to promoting good nutrition practices and addressing malnutrition in India. The event welcomed esteemed guests, including Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development and Minority Affairs, and Mr Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

At the heart of the event was the launch of the ‘Poshan Utsav Book,‘ a collaborative effort between the Ministry and the Deendayal Research Institute. This initiative aimed to revive age-old nutrition traditions and celebrate India’s rich culinary heritage. With a focus on local context and cultural practices, the book serves as a comprehensive guide to promoting nutritious foods across diverse communities.

Another significant announcement was the introduction of the Cartoon Coalition, a partnership between renowned cartoon entities and the Ministry. This coalition leverages beloved cartoon characters to convey essential messages on nutrition in a fun and relatable manner, particularly targeting children.

During his address, Mr Bill Gates commended the efforts behind the ‘Poshan Utsav Book’ for its emphasis on incorporating local traditions to promote healthier eating habits. He underscored the importance of empowering women, noting the far-reaching impact it has on communities and the nation as a whole.

Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani highlighted the success of the government’s Poshan Abhiyaan, initiated in 2018, which brings together 18 Ministries to combat malnutrition. She emphasized the digital empowerment of Anganwadi and the deployment of handheld devices for data collection, ensuring efficient service delivery at the grassroots level.

The launch of the Cartoon Coalition was met with enthusiasm, as beloved characters such as Chacha Chaudhary and Suppandi took centre stage to educate children about the importance of nutrition.
